I never read dust jackets. I don't like knowing what's coming. So I was surprised at everything that happened. I had no idea what the Hunger Games were or that Katniss stepped in for her sister to save her. (Side note: do you think it pisses authors off when their biggest shocks are in the dust jacket - I read it after I finished the book. It would piss me off for sure.)
Once I got over the shock that the point of the Hunger Games was to kill everyone else, I thought it was a titch predictable. Not that the details were - who knew about mutations coming to kill everyone? But the overall was pretty obvious. It was very apparent that Peeta really loved Katniss, while she was only doing it to stay alive. And it was pretty apparent from the first that Katniss would form an alliance with Rue. It wasn't wholly surprising when Rue died, either. I was pretty sure from the start that Katniss would live, even without the knowledge that there was a sequel.
Still, the idea was pretty novel. And I thought that action was good. I'm in the middle of the second one now and I do wonder how the series will finish. So, it's engaging, but not something I'll probably read again and again.
I really enjoyed this book. Given that it's for young adults I found the action to be enticing and the story line fairly decent. I also figured that Katniss would live and I'm curious to see how they take the other two books. Overall, really enjoyed it!
