  1. I both liked and didn't like this book.

I loved the history of Africa and how she painted a picture of the land and the people. The characters were believable. I liked watching how they both changed and remained the same throughout their lives. They were the same people, but growing up in the same way real people do.

I didn't really like her writing style. I thought she was way too wordy and took too long to say what she was trying to say. It made the book too long. I listened to this book on cd on a long trip and if I hadn't done it that way I may not have finished it. It started slow and it ended slow with a few exciting parts in the middle. I thought it could have ended about twelve times, but it kept going. I thought it would end about disk 9, but it was 13 disks long. I just thought it could be more concise.

  2. I agree with Kristin in that she took to long to say what she was trying to say. I had a really hard time getting into this book and I actually didn't finish it. Sorry Erin, I'll try your next one though.

  3. What?? I loved this book. I think the way she wrote the chapters narrated by each member of the family was awesome. I think she captured the mind of a five-year-old who related things she overheard but didn't understand in exactly the way a five-year-old would. I agree, Kingsolver gets a little long-winded, but I think her writing is colorful and captivating. Just my opinion.

  4. Well, I do agree with you there, Jen. I did like how the narration alternated between the daughters. Kingsolver really brought out the different personalities of the daughters and mother. I liked hearing the story from the different perspectives. I wished the mother would have narrated more, but it really was the story of the girls in the end.

  5. Can I join your book club? Actually I just want to read what other people say because I'm not sure I can always get a book here in time to read it in time for the discussion.
BUT I just want to comment on the Poisonwood Bible because I read it a couple of years ago.
I really loved it!! I liked how it showed the different reactions each person had to their experiences and how varied responses can be. Someone "borrowed" my copy sadly so I can't go grab it. I do agree with the too long aspect, but I really enjoyed reading it so it didn't annoy me as I think it would if I didn't like the story line to begin with. I recommend this book to people all the time.

  6. Well, of course. This blog is open to everyone, even just for reading other people's comments, if you want.

If you have suggestions for books that you've already read and want to comment on, we'll definitely take them. :)
