The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time discussion

Discussion to follow in the comments, so that people who haven't finished the book won't be bothered with spoilers. So once you're done, read and post comments!

Also: any requests for next month's book anyone?

  1. from Erin earlier:

This book isn't at all what I expected it to be, but I enjoyed it. I found it fascinating to get a brief glimpse into the mind of an autistic person. I won't say too much more till I know everyone has finished the book.

  2. Unlike my mother, I do not like knowing what's coming in books. I like to be surprised. I don't skip to parts ahead to reassure myself of what's going on. Lately I don't even read dust jackets.

Consequently, I was completely surprised by this book. I didn't even know the narrator was autistic when I started reading. I really enjoyed the book. I don't know much about autism, and I thought the thought process was very interesting - very analytical with seemingly little emotion. Does anyone know someone with autism? I'd be interested in hearing stories.

It was very interesting to see the stress that a handicapped person can place on family. And of course, Christopher doesn't even realize it. He really is in his own world. The parents can't even take a vacation without worrying about their son.

And yet, he is incredibly intelligent - able to do math and physics that most of us can't do.

    Very interesting book.

  3. I was also shocked by this book. Had no clue the boy was autistic till a few chapters into the book. I loved the detail the author used - using prime numbers for chapters, the diagrams, etc. My friend Kacey and I got into a discussion about vaccination and autism and how having a child like this completely alters your life. Kids already do, but a child who has more demanding needs can really place a toll on a family. I also love how the book ended. Christopher was done with the story so it just ended - not a lot of wrapping up story lines.

  4. I would like to suggest Pride & Prejudice and Zombies for our next book. But I'm open to anything.
